The MAK Center for Art and Architecture and Now Instant Image Hall presents Invisible Adversaries (1977), directed by VALIE EXPORT in conjunction with the exhibition VALIE EXPORT: Embodied at the MAK Center. Described by film critic J. Hoberman as “One of the richest avant-garde features of the 1970s,” Invisible Adversaries brings the viewer through Anna’s journeys, an artist who is experiencing the presence of extraterrestrial beings while navigating a deteriorating relationship with her partner, Peter. Set in Vienna, the architectural landscape functions as backdrop and subject simultaneously, interweaving through Anna’s photography and navigation of the city. This film works to integrate experimental filmmaking techniques with gripping characters and narrative, presenting a witty and pungent commentary. Invisible Adversaries is an essential VALIE EXPORT film, bringing together feminist critiques, surreal interventions, and striking imagery and sounds. This program is organized by Seymour Polatin, Exhibitions and Programs Manager at the MAK Center. Invisible Adversaries is provided by sixpackfilm. Screenings will occur March 29 & 30th from 7-9 PM.
